"A popular government without popular information, or means of acquiring it,
is but a Prologue to a Farce or a Tragedy, or perhaps both.
Knowledge will forever govern ignorance, and a people who mean to be their own
governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives."
President James Madison, 1822

A statement from “Danny” and "Dave" about the Breitenwinner Cave:
"We  firmly believe that it is morally wrong to use the grounds around Breitenwinner Cave as a live fire area in the pursuit of training.  We  feel that this should not only be a project of a select team of anthropologists, but should be a working project of all X-Zone listeners.  Please tell your friends that only mass publicity of this mass grave will push the U.S. Military into an investigation of the matter.  Though this cave was written about almost 500 years ago, it is a possibility that some of the remains belong to U.S, Canadian, and British military personnel from World War II.  The Stalag 383 Prisoner of War camp of 5000 allied troops was less than one mile away.  If it is of an ancient civilization, science should do its job, but if it is of World War II era prisoners, the families of the deceased should be notified."

Outrageous!!!
Pentagon Demands Wounded Soldier Return Re-enlistment Bonus
Just in time for the holidays, there's a special place in Hell just waiting to be filled by some as-yet-unknown Pentagon bureaucrat. Apparently, thousands of wounded soldiers who served in Iraq are being asked to return part of their enlistment bonuses -- because their injuries prevented them from completing their tours

Radioactive Ammunition Fired in Middle East May Claim More Lives than Hiroshima and Nagasaki
By firing radioactive ammunition, the U.S., U.K., and Israel may have triggered a nuclear holocaust in the Middle East that, over time, will prove deadlier than the U.S. atomic bombing of Japan.

Strange
Expert Trying to Identify Mysterious Bird Flying Around South Texas
More sightings of a huge flying creature, originally reported by KENS 5 Eyewitness News, have prompted an investigation to determine if it is a monster or myth.

Airline Navigation Threatened by Plasma Plumes
Mysterious plumes of plasma at the edge of the Earth's atmosphere are threatening airline navigation by throwing off GPS positioning information by up to the length of a football field. But a poor understanding of how the plumes form means that accurate forecasts of the phenomena – which would allow GPS users to plan around them – are years away.

Electric Space Weather Baffles Scientists
"...we've seen the smoke, but where's the smoke stack"?
The above statement from an atmospheric scientist emphasizes researchers' puzzlement over a "newly discovered form of space weather" observed over the African continent. This "strange" and "new" phenomenon is the "ion plume" -- a form of electrified "gas" (plasma) in Earth's atmosphere that is so high above ground it makes contact with space itself. (See NASA

Robotic Bugs Mingle With Cockroaches
Tiny robots programmed to act like roaches were able to blend into cockroach society, according to researchers studying the collective behavior of insects. Cockroaches tend to self-organize into leaderless groups, seeming to reach consensus on where to rest together.

Environment
UN Panel Gives Dire Warming Forecast
The Earth is hurtling toward a warmer climate at a quickening pace, a Nobel-winning U.N. scientific panel said in a landmark report released Saturday, warning of inevitable human suffering and the threat of extinction for some species.

Whale Found Deep in Brazil Rain Forest
An 18-foot minke whale ran aground on a sandbar in the Amazon jungle some 1,000 miles from the ocean, Brazilian media reported Friday. Globo television broadcast images of dozens of people gathered along the Tapajos River splashing water on the animal, whose back and dorsal fin were exposed to the hot Amazon sun. Sea creatures rarely venture so far into fresh water.

China's E-Waste Nightmare Worsening
The air smells acrid from the squat gas burners that sit outside homes, melting wires to recover copper and cooking computer motherboards to release gold. Migrant workers in filthy clothes smash picture tubes by hand to recover glass and electronic parts, releasing as much as 6.5 pounds of lead dust.

Nanosolar: Power to the People
Nanosolar coatings are as thin as a layer of paint and can transfer sunlight into power quite efficiently. Imagine the possibilities, from solar coated shingles to solar lined windows to solar powered cell phones and ipods. Solar powered buildings and homes might just become standard in the future thanks to this innovative technology

The Vertical Farm Project
By the year 2050, nearly 80% of the earth's population will reside in urban centers. Applying the most conservative estimates to current demographic trends, the human population will increase by about 3 billion people during the interim. An estimated 109 hectares of new land (about 20% more land than is represented by the country of Brazil) will be needed to grow enough food to feed them, if traditional farming practices continue as they are practiced today.

Bangladesh Cyclone Said to Kill 1,100
Hundreds of thousands of survivors were stuck Saturday behind roads blocked by fallen trees, iron roofs and thick sludge as rescue workers fought to reach towns along Bangladesh's coast that were ravaged by a powerful cyclone that killed at least 1,723 people.

Atlanta May Have to Drink the Dregs

With drought tightening its grip on the Southeast, the Atlanta area's reservoirs are almost down to the dregs — the dirtier, more bacteria-laden water close to the bottom — and it's going to require more aggressive and more expensive purification.

A follow-up on the California fire:
California Fire Documents Conflict with Reports
Several aircraft were able to fly in strong winds on the first full day of last month's Southern California firestorms, contradicting officials' earlier claims that the weather had grounded virtually all aircraft, according to documents released Saturday.
