Text Additions
It is important to notice that the within the first mention of giants in the
Bible, in
Genesis 6:4,
this statement is made: "There were giants in the earth in those days; and also
after that". The "also after that" is clearly represented as meaning "after the
Flood" as the giants appear in scriptural narration after that event.
Where the word 'Rephaim', 'Rapha', and in some places the word 'dead', is used
in the verses presented here they are all taken from the word rapha', pronounced
raw-faw', meaning, in the sense of invigorating; a giant, lax, (figuratively) a
ghost (as dead; in plural only): In the case of the word dead it is generally
accepted the this is referring to the spirits of the dead giants destroyed by
the Flood. The Rephaim are believed to be a race of giants separate from the
Nephilim of Genesis 6:4. In two verses the the translators used the word 'Rephaim'
where the word for the Nephilim appears and these verses are noted.
After
Deuteronomy 3:11:
